3/15 The Old Rectory

House, formerly rectory. C16, extended C18, refurbished c1935. Timber framed,
replaced by or enclosed in brick, pargetted 1930's. Brick ranges to north. Tile
roofs, except for slate on north slope of main roof. Rendered axial stack with
oversailing moulded frilled cap; similar stack to rear. 2 storeys and formerly
a cellar. Asymmetrical facade, 6 2-light leaded casements to ground floor, 4 2-
and 3-light similar first floor windows. Gabled porch also c1935, timber framed
but reusing embattled timbers from earlier structure. Outer boarded door; inner
part-glazed door with Gothic upper lights with pointed glazing bars; similar glazed
lights to each side. Facade and left and right return of original building
pargetted in panels with central motif of vase of flowers etc. Left hand return,
canted bay, c1935. Right hand return, rear brick range, sashes with glazing bars,
those to north horned. To north of west range, rectangular brick building, now
attached probably former bakehouse. Interior: through-passage flanked by inserted
chamfered posts and tie beams. To left, octagonal crown post with bell base and
embattled cap, and 3 braces, supporting chamfered ceiling beam, was inserted c1935.
Roll moulded joists. C18 raised panelling incorporating fire surround, to north
and east walls, c1935 copy to south wall. To right, chamfered main beams with bar
stops, small rolls to joists; inserted partitions forming room, the frieze pargetted
by the craftsman of the exterior, and depicting Adam and Eve, Moses in the
bullrushes, with fowl, vessels. Further pargetting to rear hall. First floor,
flat-joisted ceiling to lefthand room. Stair with stick balusters, mahogany
wreathed rail. Blocked C16 window to rear. Clasped purlin roof with collars and
cranked wind braces, except to left of entrance, where a butt purlin roof.
