2/40 Nelson House, Royal Hospital


Accommodation house for pupils of the Royal Hospital School. Circa 1925-33.
Buckland and Heywood. Red brick, some stone. Red tiled roofs, hipped to north
and south cross-wings. Quadrangular plan with the north and south wings extending
forward of main (west) face. Mainly 2 storeys with a single storey east (rear)
service/toilet wing. North, south and west fraces parapeted with textured and
coloured brick panels. Similar panels and textured brick dressings to windows.
Rusticated brick quoins. Band below parapet. Red brick chimneystack to left and
right of west portico. West face: 1:2:3:2:1 window range of small paned vertically
sliding sashes, the 2nd and 8th long first floor windows with no ground floor
windows under. The large, full-height stone portico in front of the 3 central bays
with entablature and triangular pediment supported by 4 pair of pilasters and
columns with moulded capitals and bases, paterae to frieze, carved cherubs, coats
of arms and naval insignia to pediment. Moulded stone doorway, pediment on
brackets. Small paned glazed door, tracery to fanlight. Central dome supported
by 6 columns on polygonal base, ribbed lead dome supporting a weathervane and a
large copper model of Nelson's ship HMS Victory. North and south faces 3:1:3
similar window range and dressings. Central stone door surround, pilasters with
capitals and bases, 'Nelson' inscribed on frieze, side finials, the window over-
set in an angled bay. The courtyard is arcaded to ground floor. In front of the
west portico are two contemporary stone benches, qv 2/41.
