An early or mid C16 blocked pedestrian gateway and flanking wall, probably the
entrance and part of the enclosing wall of the base court of Barham Hall (this
house is now demolished ana the present Hall stands on a new site). About 80
metres long and 2.5m high on average. Mainly of narrow red bricks in
irregular English bond. One section is partly of narrow gault bricks. 9
metres from the east end is a blocked C16 pedestrian gateway of brick with
limestone dressings; the jambs are splayed and the head is elliptical and
hood-moulded. The parapet above is altered, but is crowstepped and has a
blocked niche over the doorway. To right and left of the south (inner) face
of the archway are blocked original openings, suggesting that the gateway was
part of a porch or small gatehouse. The wall was much remodelled, especially
at the right hand end, in C18; and recapped with splayed brickwork on
dentilled tabling in C19. A stone coat of arms, formerly built into the wall
above the gateway, has now been removed. N.B.R.
