House, c.1840 in the Gothick manner, with core of C16 and perhaps earlier. 2
storeys. Timber-framed, largely encased in C19 flint rubble with dressings of
red brick. A dentil eaves cornice of gault brick. At the rear, the timber-
framing is plastered. The main building has a short single-storey hall range
with symmetrical cross-wings, but this may be due to C19 remodelling.
Plaintiled roofs; the cross-wings are hipped; fleur-de-lys crested ridge
tiles. Mid C19 chimneys of red brick with clusters of 2 and 3 octagonal
shafts with moulded caps and bases. C19 windows with 4-centred arched heads,
hood-moulded; small-pane casements, and the spandrels above have intersecting
glazing bars. C19 single-storey open entrance porch of red brick; 4-centred
arched openings and embattled parapets. 6-panelled door. Other entrance
doorways have hood-moulded 2-centred arched heads and battened and boarded
doors. To right is a mid C19 wing of red brick with hood-moulded small-pane
sashes. A much altered 3-cell C16 house with plain crown post roof and
massive unchamfered floor joists forms the central nucleus but there is a
little evidence for fragmentary mediaeval work: a storey-post has evidence for
an arch-braced open hall truss. The roof level has here been raised but the
low eaves level remains at the front.
