A folly cottage on the Shrubland Estate. 1857 as on painted plaques in blind
window openings. For Sir W.F. Middleton, Bart. A 3-storey tower of
pentagonal plan. Mainly of flint rubble with dressings of gault brick. Flat
roof with embattled parapets of gault brick. Bands of brick at each floor
level. Windows with semicircular heads; small pane sashes, the upper sashes
rising into the head with intersecting glazing bars. At the 3rd storey, the
windows are smaller and in pairs. Some windows are renewed with C20 small-
pane casements. Boarded entrance doors at ground and 1st storey; the latter
is approached by an external stair with flint and brick balustrading, and
above the doorway is a carved limestone plaque bearing the Middleton
achievement. A stair-turret rises full-height to give access to the roof.
