Description

CODDENHAM SPRING LANE
TM 15 NW
5/46 Spring Cottage
-
- II

House, early C17 with probable C16 core. 2 storeys. 3-cell plan. Timber-
framed and plastered; large areas of early or original roughcast plaster.
Thatched roof with axial C17 chimney of red brick. C19 and C20 small-pane
casements and several diamond mullioned windows of c.1600, once unglazed. C20
boarded and battened entrance door with thatched canopy. Fully exposed
unmoulded framing: C17 on-edge floor joists, but other features suggest an
altered C16 core. Some evidence for an original timber-framed chimney; the
present C17 chimney between hall and parlour has back-to-back fireplaces, the
latter with an elliptical arched head. At one end of the hall are C17 plaster
roses inset into the wall at high level.
