Description

CREETING ST. MARY ST. MARY'S ROAD
TM 05 NE 4/69
Buck of former post mill at Alder Carr Farm
(formerly listed as dovecote at Houghton Park Farmhouse)
9-12-55

II

The body or buck of a post mill, now disused. Early C19, originally built some ½ mile to the north. Moved here before 1880 after which it was used as a dovecote. Timber framed and weatherboarded; as a dovecote it had a hipped roof with gablets, now gone. Plastered internally with the nesting boxes still in place, the original floors removed. Post mill bucks were occasionally taken down and re-used in this manner; this is believed to be the last such example in the country. It is of considerable interest because it was moved in one piece and the original frame survives intact.
