Farmhouse; at one time manor house. Late C16 with C19 remodelling. 2 storeys
and attics. 3-cell plan. When built the C16 walling was of exposed close-
studding with herringbone brick nogging; now plastered at 1st storey, and
underbuilt in C19 red brick (now painted) below. Much encasing and rebuilding
in C19 brick at rear. The right hand gable is of C16 red brick with diaper-
patterning in burnt headers, and with a crowstepped parapet gable. It
incorporates a large chimney with 3 diagonally-set square flues (the upper
part rebuilt in C20). On each side of the chimney is a garderobe at both
storeys, also in brick with small splayed oblong windows (since blocked or
altered). A large rear external C16 chimney serving the hall has diaper
patterning; the square shaft is largely rebuilt. Adjacent to it is an
original (or near original) staircase tower with newel staircase through 3
storeys; also of brick with diaper work. To left is a C19 parapet gable of
red brick with crowstepping. Plaintiled roof. Mid C19 ground storey windows
with segmental heads; casements with transomes. C18 or early C19 1st storey
casements. Mid C19 single storey entrance porch, plaintiled with crowstepped
parapet gable and 6-panelled door. Very closely spaced studwork exposed in
1st storey rooms with tension stud-bracing; one chamber has an unusually late
example of a diamond-mullioned window, of 4 lights. 1st and 2nd floor joists
are set on-edge, and were possibly plastered from the outset. Butt purlin
roof. A rear C19 service wing to right.
