Nos 26 and 27 LOWER ROAD

Pair of cottages, built mid C16 as one house; remodelled and divided into cottages late C18/C19. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with rebuilt axial C19/C20 chimney of red brick. C20 small-pane casements. A C19 boarded entrance door to each cottage. At No.26 is heavy C16 timber-framing: studwork with reversed arch wind-bracing; Evidence for shuttered diamond-mullioned windows. Signs of truncation at left hand end and of repositioned tie-beams. The two central bays appear to have comprised a hall with massive 1st floor framing, into which a chimney was inserted in C17/C18. No.27 not examined.
