6/10 Vale Farmhouse

Former farmhouse, early C16.with extension of c.1600. A rare example in
Suffolk of a 2-bay "croglofft" house with an open smoke bay at one end, and a
loft at the other. One storey and attics. Timber-framed and plastered.
Roman pantiled roof, once thatched; an axial C17/C18 chimney of red brick.
Small-pane C20 casements; an ovolo-mullioned window of c.1600 at left-hand
gable. Boarded C19 entrance door at cross-entry position. Good unmoulded
framing: arch windbraced studwork. Heavy unchamfered floor joists at storeyed
bay. Roof probably of coupled-rafter form and originally hipped. Moderate
smoke-blackening. Circa 1600, parlour block was added to right: close
studding with an ovolo-mullioned window repositioned in C20 (see above). An
arched parlour fireplace of c.1600. The house is of particular interest for
its rare original 2-bay plan form.
