BATTISFORD VALLEY ROAD
TM 05 SE

6/19 Spinks Farmhouse
-
- II

Former farmhouse, mid C16 with extensions of late C16 and early C17 at either
end. 2 storeys, 3-cell plan. Timber-framed and roughcast. Concrete pantiled
roof, formerly thatched. An internal end chimney of early C17 red brick; an
axial chimney part plastered, part rebuilt C20; an external C19 chimney at
south-west end. C19 and C20 small-pane casements, some with C20 leaded
glazing. Late C20 entrance porch of red brick with glazed door. The core
consists of a mid C16 3-cell house with plain heavy framing; diamond mullion
window evidence, coupled rafter roof formerly hipped at both ends. Evidence
for a timber-framed chimney. In late C16 a large lintelled open fireplace was
inserted in the hall, and the parlour cell was extended by one bay. In c.1630
a plaster ceiling with fleurs-de-lys insets was added to the parlour and an
arched open fireplace at the gable; in the chamber above is an ovolo-moulded
window, and the chimney blocks a late C16 diamond mullioned window.
