3/70 Stable aligned north/
south, 40m north-west of
Holyoak Farmhouse

5table, late C18, for 8 horses. 5 bays, with loft above. Timber-framed and
weatherboarded. Thatched roof. Most of the upper floor is constructed of
clay daub, a rare surviving feature in Suffolk: oak binding beams have bolted
knees, and laid across the beams at about 0.5m centres are unsquared poles of
elm or oak. Over the poles is a layer of clay daub, about O.1m thick, with a
high proportion of chalk. This form of construction was widely used in modest
houses and farm buildings, but rarely survives to the present day. Main
framing members of oak; primary-braced studding of pine. Clasped purlin roof.
Stalls and hay-racks remain in part. In poor condition at date of survey.
