Description

RINGSHALL BILDESTON ROAD
TM 05 SW

5/158 Bennetts Farmhouse

1.10.85

- II

House, C15 or early C16 with C17 and C19 alterations. 1 storey and attics.
3-cell plan. Timber-framed: the front wall encased in mid C19 red brick,
other walls plastered. Thatched roof, half-hipped at left hand end. Axial
C17 chimney of red brick. One C19 gabled casement dormer. C19 small-pane
casements and boarded entrance door. A central open hall has had its open
truss removed, but most of the smoke-blackened coupled-rafter roof remains;
there is evidence for a former crownpost system. The right hand cell also has
a smoke-blackened roof, suggesting that the partition wall was not of full
height. An inserted floor in the hall and a chimney in the former cross-
passage are C17 alterations. Framing largely concealed.
