Farmhouse. Mid C16 with C17 additions. Timber framed and plastered; hipped
roof with mainly plaintiles to front and pantiles to rear. 2 storeys and
attic U-shape plan: a 3-cell cross-entry front range with later wings to
rear. 4 windows, mainly C18 casements: all the upper windows and one to the
ground floor have old square-leaded panes. A C19 tripartite sash window to
the right. C19 6-panel door (the upper 2 panels glazed) and bracketed
pediment. Internal stack: rectangular shaft with moulded base and 2 slender
buttresses to each long side; C19 cap; rendered base inscribed 'WK 1866'.
Right hand return front has 3 windows: tripartite sashes to ground floor, 6-
paned sashes to first floor, with a longer central stair window with stained
glass. Doorway has 6-panel raised and fielded door (the upper 2 panels
glazed), architrave and pediment. One shallow-gabled dormer. Service wing
has slatted ground floor windows. Further old square-leaded windows to rear,
and one with early diamond-leaded glass. Interior largely unaltered since
C19, with dairy and scullery unusually intact. In the hall is a roll-moulded
bridging beam, the mouldings continued onto the storey posts and terminating
in ornate corbels (cf. Brundish Manor, Item 4/15). The parlour has a moulded
bridging beam and cornice. In the hall chamber is a plank and muntin
partition, probably of late C17 date. Late C18 stair inserted to rear of
parlour. Some good mid-late C19 fireplaces with cast iron grates. From the
first floor framing it is clear that the service end was extended by one bay
before the rear addition to it was made.
