Description

LAXFIELD BADINGHAM ROAD
TM 36 NW

7/31 Hulvertree Farmhouse
-

-- II

Former farmhouse. C17, in 2 phases, with a cross-wing dated 1983 on the site
of the old dairy. Timber framed and rendered with a pantiled roof. 1½
storeys. One gabled dormer with a 3-light casement window; 2-light and 3-
light casement windows to the ground floor, all late C20 replacements in
traditional form. Entrance door in lobby-entrance position on the rear wall,
with a lean-to porch. Internal stack with plain red brick shaft. Interior
with exposed studding and ceilings: plain frame with no middle rail. To the
left, 1½ bays, early C17, the ½ bay enclosing the chimney-stack, the remaining
bay with chamfered main beam and joists, all with jewel stops and groove. On
the upper floor, an original 3-light ovolo-mullioned window, blocked, but with
the mullions in situ. Roof, with modern reinforcements, has principal rafters
and butt purlins. A tie beam by the stack has been removed, and the front
wallplate ends with part of a scarf joint which indicates that this part of
the house was built on to an earlier section, now replaced by the present
right hand end. This is very plain, and was clearly always storied. A tie
beam at the junction of the 2 frames has been cut through for access: it has a
very marked camber and evidence for arched braces, but no studding or infill.
Roof with clasped purlins and no principals. The house was encased in red
brick in the C19, and brick replaces the studding in part of the rear wall,
now rendered outside.
