3/160 Chestnut Lodge
Farmhouse. C16, in 3 closely-dated phases. L-shape plan with later cross-
wing to west. Timber framed and plastered with remains of old panelled
plasterwork. 2 storeys and attic. Fine late C16 crowstepped brick gable end
to south: paired windows at ground and first floor with original cavetto
mullions and diamond-leaded glass; some of the cames are the originals re-set.
The first floor windows have steep, boldly-moulded pediments. 2 blocked oval
attic windows. Remains of first floor moulded string course. Centre panel
inscribed 'WL 1782'. Integral stack with 2 octagonal shafts on moulded bases.
Other windows are mid C20 square-leaded casements. To south of main range a
lobby entrance with mid C20 door. Internal stack to main range and a massive
external stack with crowstepped off-sets against side wall of cross-wing: each
has 2 octagonal shafts on moulded bases. Single storey colourwashed brick
addition to east of main range. Chamfered-joist hall ceiling. North room of
cross-wing has storey posts carved with upturned volutes (one missing) above
which are the initials 'IA'. The main parlour to the south has a ceiling with
fully-moulded cross-beams, and the chamber above a similarly-moulded bridging
beam. 3 fireplaces with depressed moulded stucco arches. Some good first
floor studding with reversed braces. Newel stairs in main range with original
door to attic flight. Queen-post roofs to main range and north end of cross-
wing. The roof over the southern half of the cross-wing has clasped and butt
purlins and is slightly later in date.
