Description

GIPPING MENDLESHAM ROAD
TM 06 SE

5/50 Hill Farmhouse
-

-- II

Farmhouse, probably c.1600; remodelling of c.1900. 2-cell lobby-entrance
plan, the parlour cell is of cross-wing form. 2 storeys. Timber-framed; the
front and side elevations encased in gault brick with red brick bands and
dressings in c.1900. The two gables and the entire rear of the original
building remain plastered; the gables would have oversailed until the walling
was encased beneath. Plaintiled roofs. An axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt
in gault and red brick. To rear of the cross-wing is an early C17 chimney of
red brick with sawtooth shaft; on either side is a lean-to structure, probably
a gardrobe. Window openings of c.1900 with splayed lintels, the windows
replaced c.1980 with aluminium casements. Three splayed bay windows with
hipped slated roofs, and a gable slated entrance porch at lobby-entrance
position. A 2-window, 2-storey extension of c.1900 to right. Interior not
examined. Included despite C20 alterations because clearly a substantial
farmhouse of c.1600 retaining much original work.
