TM 06 SW

4/89
- Conference Centre,
formerly barn and stable,
1OOm south-east of
Haughley Park House

GV II

Conference centre, built as a barn and stable. The barn was added to the late
C16 stable in early C17. Barn: red brick in English bond, the west and upper
east gable timber-framed and weatherboarded. Pantiled roof, once thatched.
On the south side is a timber-framed and plastered original porch, and high in
the brickwork are two panels of 8 ventilation slits glazed in C20. In the
north wall is a row of blind recesses beneath the eaves. Mid C20 framed and
boarded doors, and windows with leaded lights. Good 2-tier butt-purlin roof,
the upper tier of purlins windbraced. The stable is timber-framed and
plastered, with heavy framing. A loft just below the eaves level has been
removed apart from heavy binding beams mortised for joists. In the east gable
is a mullioned window now facing into the barn. Clasped purlin roof. The
buildings were converted to a conference centre in 1977.
