Description

HAUGHLEY NEW BELLS ROAD, HAUGHLEY
TM 06 SW GREEN

4/92 Barn 60m south-west of
- New Bells Farmhouse

-- II

Barn, late C16 with alterations of C18. 8 bays, of which the 2 easterenmost
were added in, perhaps, C18. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Corrugated
iron roof. The 2 bays at the west end retain the original steeply-pitched and
hipped roof structure with remnants of the thatch covering; the remainder was
rebuilt at a lower pitch in C20. An C18 gabled porch on the north side, 3
bays from the west. Good quality C16 close-studding. Clasped purlin roof
with some windbracing. Tiebeams have generally lost their bracing, and some
were repositioned or replaced in C18/C19. The eastern 2 bays have had a loft
above, and were probably added as stabling, later to be integrated with the
barn.
