Description

STOWUPLAND SAXHAM STREET
TM 06 SE

5/189 Upland House
-

-- II

Farmhouse, C17 with possible earlier core. Major early C19 remodelling
(perhaps c.1818, see below). T-shaped C17 house at rear, with early C19 range
added to front. Front range: Gault brick with dentil course at eaves and a
band at 1st floor. Hipped slated roof with internal chimneys of gault brick.
2 storeys. 3 windows. Small-pane sashes with flat arches of gauged brick.
6-panelled entrance door, the upper 4 panes glazed. Semi-circular fanlight; a
gauged brick arch above with keystone and a pattern of leaded stained glass
within; immediately over the door is a leaded flat canopy. A 2-cell C17 block
with hall and parlour is behind the front range: red brick, probably encasing
timber framing; hipped plaintiled roof (one tile has been recovered from the
roof, bearing the date 1818). Back-to-back lintelled open fireplaces. Behind
is a service range of one storey with attics, of unusually wide span: timber-
framed and plastered with C19 cable-pattern pargetting. Slated roof once
thatched; two mid C20 flat-roofed dormers. Interior of rear range not
examined: possible pre-C17 core.
