- Cartlodge, 40m south-west
of Whitefield House
Cartlodge with granary above. Mid C17 with early C19 alterations. 2-lane
draw-through type, 3 bays deep. Timber-framed and pebbledashed; some
areas of C17/C18 beaded weatherboarding. Plaintiled roof; the rear gable
has a C19 spike finial to the bargeboards. Open at the front at ground
storey with a central post and strongly-curved arch-braces at the rear
gable are large C19 boarded doors. In the front gable is a louvred
granary window. Principal posts in the side walls have prominent reverse-
curved arch windbraces of archaic appearance for C17 : good oak studding.
Knee-braced beams were insertlld in late C18 or early C19 to support the
C17 granary floor. Clasped purlin roof, ceiled : possibly renewed in C19.
