Description

RATTLESDEN BRETTENHAM ROAD
TL 95 NE
3/81 Barkers Farmhouse
-
- II
Former farmhouse, early C17, 2 storeys, originally with attics. 3-cell cross-
entry plan. Timber framed and plastered; above the rear cross-entry doorway,
now within a C19 lean-to extension, is a plaster panel bearing a C17 pargetted
figure of a rampant lion, almost full-size. Roman pantiled C19 roof. An
axial chimney of red brick, the narrow brickwork of the shaft is exposed more
fully than formerly by the lower pitch of the later roof: the 4 square shafts
in larger red bricks are possibly a later C17 rebuilding. C19 small-pane
casements. Boarded door at cross-entry position. Despite loss of roof, a
good example of an early C17 farmhouse. Studding with long tension-
studbraces. Diamond-mullioned windows in hall and service cell, and ovolo-
mullioned in parlour cell; a number of both types complete, and one glazed.
Square headed chamfered twin service room doorways with plank doors. On-edge
floor joists, rather slender for date. Lintelled open fireplace in hall,
brick arched fireplaces in 3 other rooms, all original.
