House, probably once a farmhouse. Early C17. Single-storey flat-roofed wing
to east added c.1972 for the composer Benjamin Britten, and his partner
Peter Pears, who owned the house for many years prior to his death in 1976.
Timber framed, encased in colourwashed brick. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys and
attic. 2-cell, lobby entry type with a central stack. South front has 2 windows,
standard small-paned casements under segmental arches. Small C20 lean-to porch with side door; within the porch is a half-glazed 4-panel door. The main entrance is now to the north. The frame is partly exposed internally, with reverse-curved braces
and original window openings. Both ground-floor rooms have bridging beams
with nicked stop-chamfers, the joists concealed. Newel stairs, the attic
flight original. The roof has a single row of clasped purlins and cranked
wind braces.
