Description

TL 96 NE GT ASHFIELD ELMSWELL ROAD

2/47 Gate Farmhouse
15.11.54 (formerly listed as
Whitegate Farmhouse)

-- II

Former farmhouse, probably C16, with early C17 alterations. One storey and
attics: a short 2-storey crosswing towards the road is probably a C17
addition. Timber-framed and plastered with large moulded panels of C18
design; a reproduction of c.1980. Plaintiled roofs: C20 raking casement
dormers. An axial C17 chimney of red brick with recessed corners to the
oblong shaft; in the cross-wing is an internal gable chimney with similar
shaft. C20 casements, and some C16/C17 mullioned windows restored and glazed.
A short wing on the south side added in early C17 is jettied at 1st floor with
exposed joists and knees. Above is an oriel with coved cill, perhaps a C20
restoration: the oversailing gable tiebeam has turned drop finials. C20
boarded entrance door with arched head. This wing appears to have been
originally at the rear, the main entrance front being on the north side.
Interior not examined.
