2/83 The Elms

-- II

House, C16, in 2 stages. One storey and attics. 3-cell lobby-entrance plan.
Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched half-hipped roof with two eyebrow
casement dormers. Axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt in C20 red brick. 3-light
small-pane casements. Oak plank battened door of 1987, at lobby-entrance
position. An open hall house, probably of early C16, much altered c.1550-
1580. An open truss with plain archbraced tie beam, and evidence for widely-
spaced studding. Coupled rafter roof. Major remodelling of mid C16 date:
close-studding with arch windbracing. Good chamfered 1st floor joists in all
cells. The parlour cell to right was entirely rebuilt, the 1st floor level
lower than that inserted into the open hall. Lintelled open fireplace in
lower bay of hall. (most of the lower bay was truncated during addition of
parlour block). Included despite late C20 remodelling because of high-quality
C16 work.
