House, at one time a shop and The Crown public house. Mid C17. Timber
framed, mainly plastered; right gable end and two-thirds of rear is cased in
late C19 red brick. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. 2 windows, C18 3-
light mullion and transom casements with old square-leaded glass; window
boxes. Ground floor has 2 slightly splayed projecting shop windows with small
square panes, carried on raking brackets; the windows are grooved for external
shutters. Between these is a lobby entrance with 6-panel door (upper 2 panels
glazed). A plaintiled lean-to hood extends across the facade at first floor
level. Internal stack with C19 panelled square shaft. Left gable end has
original 4-light first floor window with ovolo mullions. Against this gable
end is a C19 stack. 2-cell internal layout. At the left end is a small one-
bay room. On the ground floor this room has an axial bridging beam: to the
rear are plain joists set flat; to the front, an oak newel stair and a later
straight stair. The adjacent room has 2 bridging beams, ovolo-moulded on the
ground floor, chamfered on the upper floor. At a later date a stack has been
inserted into the centre of this room, an unusual arrangement perhaps
suggesting the house has been reduced in size. Plain first floor studding
with trimming for original windows. Roof has 2 rows of diminished butt
purlins, the lower row stepped.
