DEBENHAM CROSS GREEN

Originally one house, now 3. Late C16 with later alteration and partial
rebuilding. In-line addition of c1800 to right. Timber framed and
plastered, pantiled roof. 3-cell form. 2 storeys, No.5 with attic. 3
windows, small C19 and C20 casements with horizontal glazing bars. 3 plank
doors. Internal stack; small external stack on left gable end. Right wing
has mid C20 casement windows and a plank door; small internal stack.
Interior. Hall (No.5) and parlour (No.6) have C16 chamfered ceiling joists.
2 blocked parlour windows with cavetto mullions. Parlour and chamber over
have open fireplaces with lining of brick joints; both incorporate 2 different
sizes of brick. No.5 has newel stair by stack. Upper floor of No 6 raised
and re-joisted in C19 due to subsidence. An original upper window with
diamond mullions. Evidence for re-used material, especially in No.4. Roof
largely concealed; a lower row of stepped butt purlins in No.5 suggests re-
roofing.
