Description

DEBENHAM GREAT BACK LANE
TM 16 SE
6/79 No.14 (Eureka Cottage) &
- No.16
GV II

Originally one house, now 2. C16 with mid C17 alterations. Timber framed,
mostly roughcast-rendered, pantiled roof. 3 cells. 2 storeys and attic.
Scattered fenestration, various mid C20 casements. 2 doorways with mid C20
reproduction plank doors and contemporary gabled porches of brick and timber.
Internal stack with mid C20 shaft. Interior. No.14 has modernised interior
with much of the structure visible. 2 complete bays and part of a 3rd, the
remainder of this bay comprising No.16. Widely-spaced studs, reverse-curved
braces. Heavy wallposts with evidence at rear for tie beam braces passing
through the present floor level; a small part of one brace in situ. Queen-
post roof with cranked braces; one tie beam and associated roof truss removed.
Roof was half-hipped to right, with a gablet. Plain on-edge joists to first
floor: these, together with the stack, appear to be mid C17 insertions,
possibly an adaptation of a non-residential building. Interior of No.16 not
examined.
