TM 16 SE
6/106 No.44 (Warwick House)
-
GV II

House. Early C16 front range, later C16 wing to rear. Late C18 facade.
Timber framed, roughcast render, plaintiled roof. 2 storeys. Former jetty to
street. Symmetrical 2-bay facade. Sash windows in flush frames, 9-paned to
first floor, 12-paned to ground floor. Doorway has 6-panel raised and
fielded door, the upper 2 panels glazed. Internal stack to rear. Interior.
Front range comprised hall and service cells, the latter containing a shop. A
single 2-bay room on upper floor. Good intact studding. Front wall pushed
forward on ground floor, preserving the old studs. Evidence for shop doorway
at extreme left and for oriel window in hall. Solid-tread stair formerly in
service end now re-positioned in rear wing. Closely-spaced plain joists in
hall ceiling. Heavy braces to open truss. Plain crown-post roof with 2-way
bracing. 3-bay rear wing: widely-spaced studs, plain ceiling joists, 2
cambered open tie beams, intact queen-post roof. Stack between the 2 wings,
probably contemporary with rear wing: open fireplace to rear, blocked hall
fireplace retaining old lintol. For structural drawing of front range see Mr
T. Easton, Bedfield Hall.
