Description

MONK SOHAM SCHOOL ROAD
TM 26 NW
2/159 Pennys Cottage
-
- II

House. Late C15 core with substantial early C17 remodelling. Service cell to
north is c.1800 addition, once the parish coalhouse. Timber framed and
plastered, thatched roof. 2 cells. 1 1/2 storeys. Various casement windows.
To west, a boarded half-door and gabled dormer. Stack against south gable
end; small one-storey mid C20 addition beyond. North gable end (facing road)
has mid C20 lean-to porch with boarded half-door. Interior. Older work has
good 2-bay frame: widely-spaced studs, reverse-curved braces at corners. To
west is a blocked doorway with shallow pointed head. To east, an incomplete
diamond-mullioned window which passes through the present floor level. Older
work has no evidence for pegged studding in end gables, suggesting it is a
fragment of a larger building. Upper floor of early C17, contemporary with
storey posts: plain joists set flat. Stack is of about same date, the
fireplace altered in C18. Roof has re-used coupled rafters with sporadic
sooting; later side purlins.
