TM 06 NE
Former farmhouse. A C16 3-cell house with early C17 in-line addition to right
forming a single long range. Timber framed and rendered, pantiled roof. 2
storeys and attic. 5 windows, mid C20 casements with horizontal glazing bars.
A mid C20 plank door and gabled timber porch in position of cross-entry. 2
internal stacks, one in each phase, have substantial axial shafts, the lower
portions of C16-C17 brick. Interior. C16 house is in 5 bays: much exposed
framing, especially in parlour cell which has close studding. Evidence for
various windows, including a diamond-mullioned attic window. 2 4-centre
arched doorways by stack into hall and parlour. Hall has chamfered-joist
ceiling and an altered plank and muntin partition against the former cross-
passage. Massive fireplace lintol, the opening altered. Parlour joists
plastered over. A particularly well-preserved fireplace in the parlour has
undamaged brickwork with remains of lining of mortar joints. Upper fireplaces
are later C17 additions. Parlour chamber fireplace has depressed stuccoed
arch and a simple monochrome painted design above showing a rectangle with
serrated border enclosing a square panel with similar motifs. C16 roof has
one row of wind-braced clasped purlins. Early C17 addition is in a single
long bay, this end of the house more altered. Ground floor room at junction
with C16 end has chamfered floorbeam with nicked ogee stops.
