Description

TL 97 SE LANGHAM STOCK HILL

2/19 Hillwatering Cottage

II

House. C16 and C17. Timber-framed and rendered; thatched roof, hipped. 1½
storeys; an addition on the left has a lower roof-line. 3-cell main range
with lobby entrance: the internal chimney-stack has 3 short attached square
shafts set diagonally on a rectangular base. 3 gabled dormers with plain
bargeboards and finials have 2-light small-paned casement windows; on the
ground floor, 3 3-light small-paned casement windows with arched heads to
frames and surrounds; a similar window to the extension. C20 arched doorframe
and plank door. Timbers exposed inside: studding in the main good, but no
middle rail to frame and arched braces at the corners. The internal stack has
2 back-to-back hearths with plain timber lintels, and the lower section on the
left, extended in the mid C20, contains another open fireplace in what was
initially an end stack. Discrepancies in the frame suggest that all or part
of the house was initially single-storey and became storied in the later C17.
The main beams have curved stops with bar. Part of the roof at the right end
visible: clasped purlins, no principals; assembly marks on wallplate.
