2/21 The Walnut Tree
House. Early C17. Timber-framed and rendered; brick gable end on left;
thatched roof with ornamental ridge and eaves. 1½ storeys; 3-cell form; 4
bays. An internal chimney-stack with a plain shaft of Tudor brick topped by 2
hoods of arched brick; later end stack on right. Small-paned 2-light casement
windows to the ground floor front; 2 large C20 inserted dormers at the rear.
Mid C20 extensions with whitewashed brick on the right, and a 2-storey
irregularly-roofed addition to the front containing an entrance hall and
stair. Widely-spaced studding exposed on the ground floor. In the right end
bay, plain ceiling joists, and in the upper room a plain side purlin roof. In
the central room clamps pegged to the studs support the ceiling joists, and an
open fireplace with Tudor brick surround has a plain cambered lintel. A
slight difference in ceiling heights suggests a possible older core. The end
bay on the left is an addition, with a marked gap between the ends of the
wallplates: thin replacement joists in ceiling and a reconstructed fireplace.
The basic house seems to have had a 2-cell end-chimney form.
