3/51 Four Ash Cottage
House, formerly divided into 2. C17, with older fragments. Timber-framed and
rendered with panels of comb pargetting. Thatched roof with decorated ridge.
11/2-storeys. 2 internal chimney-stacks with plain rebuilt red brick shafts.
3 eyebrow dormers with 2-light C20 metal casement windows; on ground floor,
one 3-light old window with transome and glazing-bars and 2 2-light casements,
both different. Half-glazed door with a moulded flat pediment. A small
rendered lean-to on the right with clay plantiles. Entry into parlour with
chamfered main beam, plain joists, and fireplace of Tudor brick with plain
timber lintel. The main posts and some other components are reused from an
older frame. Little timbering visible in remainder of interior; roof
plastered over. In the middle section an open hearth was found during
restoration, well below the level of the present floor. This is taken to
indicate that there was a medieval house on the site. Included for Group
