Description

TM 38 SW WISSETT CHEDISTON ROAD

1/55 Hor's Farmhouse
-

GV II

Farmhouse. Late C15, with later extensions. Timber-framed and rendered;
thatched roof; an internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. 1½
storeys; 7 bays. Various windows: 2 with diamond mullions remaining; some
plain 3-light casements and one in 3-light mullion-and-transome style, all
old. Plank door. Basic 3-cell medieval plan, with a small 2-bay open hall;
both ends of the house have been extended. The partition at the lower end of
the hall remains, with evidence for 3 original doorways, one now blocked; the
ceiling joists in the former service area have been renewed. On the first
floor, the upper part of the lower end partition has been shifted across, to
make 2 equal-sized upper rooms. The inserted hall ceiling has plain
unchamfered joists and a chamfered main beam. Both the doors for the original
cross-entry are blocked; on the rear wall, part of the long 5-light hall
window remains with diamond mullions in situ. The chimney-stack, with 2 back-
to-back hearths on the ground floor, was inserted into the parlour at the
upper end of the hall, which was subsequently enlarged by the addition of a
further bay. At a later stage still, this end was further extended by adding
yet another bay. Both of these extensions have windows with diamond mullions,
and there is another similar window above the stair, beside the chimney-stack.
The roof has some form of side purlins, but the purlins themselves are above
ceiling-level; part of the windbraces can be seen, and the rafters are smoke-
blackened along the whole extent of the original roof.
