Parish church. Medieval; chancel restored 1860. Nave, chancel, west tower,
north porch. Flint rubble with stone dressings; knapped flint tower. Slated
roofs. C15 square 3-stage tower with diagonal buttresses to the west face: in
the lowest stage each buttress has a blocked trefoil-headed statue niche and
in the plinth 2 stone shields. 2-light west window. 2-light belfry openings,
the tracery partly renewed in brick. Flat red brick parapet with square
pinnacles, probably C18. The nave probably has a C12 core: there is one
blocked C12 window in the north wall and the inner arch of the south doorway
is semi-circular. The other nave windows are mainly Perpendicular, some
renewed C19. Early C16 south doorway of red brick. C15 porch, considerably
restored but with its original roof. The nave doorway, said to be C13, has a
good early plank door. C13 chancel with various Perpendicular-style windows;
in the north wall is evidence for 2 original lancet window openings now
infilled. Interior. Good C15 arched-braced nave roof in 8 bays, with a
crenellated wallplate. The chancel roof is of similar type and date, the
wallplate with running designs of foliage. Simple pointed-arch piscina in
south sanctuary. Good C15 font, the panels of the bowl with mutilated
carvings of the Seven Sacraments and the Baptism of Christ; angels to the
underside of the bowl and a buttressed stem with cusped panels between. The
font stands on a 2-stepped octagonal plinth, with a raised upper step in the
form of a Maltese Cross and with panelled risers. Good set of 20 C15
poppyhead bench-ends in nave, 4 with carved arm-rests; 2 other detached
benches have carved backs. The chancel stalls have further C15 poppyhead
ends. On the nave walls are 3 C16 painted biblical texts with ornamental
borders, one being painted over an earlier scene said to show the Entry into
Jerusalem. Arms of James II on south nave wall; framed C18 Commandments on
north nave wall. In the chancel floor there are several C17 and C18 ledger
slabs, mainly to the Rede family of Weston Hall.
