4/27 Haylock's Cottage


Cottage. C18. One storey and attics; basic 2-cell lobby-entrance plan.
Timber-framed and rendered; thatched roof with decorated ridge. The internal
chimney-stack has a plain red brick shaft. 2 3-light casement windows to the
ground floor with a single horizontal bar to lights, one with pintle hinges; 2
gabled dormers with 2-light casement windows. The original doorway has been
blocked and replaced by a sloping buttress: the present entry is into a small
porch at the south-west end. A single-storey extension in matching materials
on the north-east end, and later lean-to's at the rear. The framing inside is
very slight; primary braces bisect the studs, and there is no middle rail;
small main beams and narrow joists set on edge, their ends supported on clamps
attached to the outer walls. Newel stair beside stack. Included for Group
Value, and as a rare late example of a lobby-entrance plan.
