2/8 The Plough (formerly
27.11.54 listed as Plough Inn)
Public house. Dated by iron ties 'D' over 'EB' 1701; considerable alterations
and additions of C19 and C20. Stucco on brick, lined in imitation of ashlar;
rusticated quoins. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. 3-bay facade: C19 flush-frame
sash windows with glazing bars to first floor, C20 square-leaded cross windows
to ground floor; all windows have moulded architraves. C20 door, plain
rectangular fanlight, C20 doorcase with pilasters and bracketed cornice. Over
the doorway is a modern panel, once a window, stating that Barkis the carrier
in 'David Copperfield' started from here. Gable stacks. To the right is a
single-storey range now used for storage and garaging. Listed on account of
association with Dickens.
