SOMERLEYTON THE GREEN

4/35 Nos 7 and 8
Pair of estate cottages. Circa 1850. Red brick, the upper floor pebbledash-
rendered with applied timbering (some missing). Thatched roof. Picturesque
style. Asymmetrical form, with 2 half-hipped gables facing forward and a
similar end gable to the right. 2 storeys. Casement windows under segmental
arches; the original lead lattice cames only remain in the upper part of each
light. One half-dormer. 2 doorways, each with boarded door and half-hipped
thatched porch on timber posts; the doorway to No.7 is set in the side wall.
Bargeboards with pierced lobes. 3 red brick stacks with grouped flues, mostly
set diamondwise. Part of the model village of estate workers' cottages built
around the green for Sir Morton Peto to the designs of John Thomas.
