A C17 timber-framed and plastered house. 2 storeys. C20 casement windows.
Roof thatched, with a red brick diagonally shafted chimney stack on a rectangular
base. A C20 addition has been built at the west end (Mumfords Cottage )

Layfield and house adjoining, the Red House and Mumfordsform a group.
