Farmhouse. C15. 2 storeys: 4 bays: Wealden type, with 2 storied ends jettied
on street frontage only. Timber framed, plastered, and pargetted on the front
with the remains of comb patterning. At each end of the upper storey are
panels with a simple 'Tree of Life' design. C.1960 plastering in panels to
sides and rear. Half-hipped, plaintiled roof. Internal chimney-stack with C20
shafts of traditional design. 4 cross windows to ground floor, the 2 centre
windows with triangular pediments: 4 2-light casements to upper storey: all
windows with c.1970 square leading replacing old lights in same style. 6-panel
fielded door. Fine interior, with medieval and C16 features. Crown-post roof.
Carved and moulded inserted ceiling in hall. Hall and parlour fireplaces with
lintels carved with running leaf designs: in hall, a cinquefoil brick arcade
above. Illustrated in Basil Oliver's 'Old Houses and Village Buildings in East
Anglia' plate XLVIII. For a detailed account, see also Procs. Suffolk
Institute of Archaeology, Vol. XXIX, Pt.3, 1964. A high boundary wall along
the road frontage adjoins the west end of Dover House, linking it with Cyder
House. C19. Random flint, with red brick piers and capping. 4 bays. Included
for group value.
