5/9 Church Cottage
-

- II

House. Mid C16. 1½ storeys, 3 bays. Timber-framed and plastered, with
traces of simple pargetting: single-storey lean-to extensions to east and
west, partly in brick. Thatched roof, half-hipped on west, fully hipped on
east. Basic 2-roomed end chimney plan, with a single room above, now divided
into 2. Heavy framing exposed inside: no middle rail to side walls, reversed
braces at corners. One cross-entry door, with mutilated spandrels, still in
use. Fireplace with wide cambered lintel. Open truss with long arched braces:
tie-beam cut through. Several blocked original window openings: diamond
mullions remaining in former west gable wall. The house is set sideways-on to
the road, down a steep slope.
