BARDWELL
SCHOOL LANE (NORTH SIDE)

Bardwell Voluntary
Controlled School

II

Primary School. Built 1855. Single storey. Black knapped random flint: slate
roof with corbels and copings to gables. Rusticated quoins and dressings in
cement stucco. 4 3-light mullion-and-transome type windows in a heavy Tudor
style. A projecting enclosed gabled porch has a damaged shield in the gable
end inscribed 'Christo in Parvulis', surmounted by a small bell-cote and cross:
2 small windows, and a door in each side, one for the boys, the other for the
girls, but one now blocked. The school was built with money left to the parish
under the will of Mrs. Anna Maria Dunlap in 1854. Her gift is commemorated by
a plaque on the schoolroom wall.
