- II*

Banqueting house. 1746: Designed by William Kent for the 2nd
Duke of Grafton in Palladian style. White brick, with stone
dressings, cornice and pediment, and unusual rustications in
white and pale grey flint. Domed, lead-covered roof to centre
with triangular pediment, said to have been reconstructed after a
fire, omitting some of the original interior decoration (see
Pevsner). 2-storey centre with a pedimented small-paned sash
window to front and back, and 2 lower flanking extensions with
semi-circular headed niches. On each side, a dog-leg stair with
stone balustrades leads up to the principal room on the first
floor. Below this room is another, with 4 free-standing Tuscan
columns.
