Description

TL 97 NE HEPWORTH THE STREET
(WEST SIDE)

1/23 Yew Cottage

II

House. C15 and early C17. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and rendered, with
thatched roof and internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. 2-
light and 3-light casements window with cross-bar. Enclosed late C19 porch
in whitewashed brick with a shallow-pitched slate roof and corbelled gable.
The ground storey rooms on each side of the chimney-stack have exposed
ceilings with plain heavy joists and main beams. Much-restored open
fireplaces with timber lintels. The 2 central bays of the frame, to the north
of the stack, are the remains of an open hall: a blocked 6-light diamond-
mullioned window on the west wall: the tie-beams of the open truss and one end
truss removed. The north end may also be part of the medieval house, but is
much remodelled, and the roof is a C18 replacement. The roof over the former
open hall is inaccessible. The chimney-stack has been inserted into the lower
bay of the hall, and the 2 bays at south end are early C17: reversed braces at
corners, side purlin roof. A later extension along part of rear wall.
