Description

TL 97 SE STANTON UPTHORPE ROAD

3/57 Barn to south of Wrenshall
Farmhouse

GV II

Barn. Part early C17, part early C18. Timber-framed and weatherboarded with
pantiled roof. 2 high cart entrances on the front, and 2 small lean-to
extensions on the rear. 10 bays: the 5 bays to the north formed the original
C17 barn. Full height studs, with short arched braces at the corners, halved
against the outside of the studs; long arched braces to tie-beams, replaced in
all but one truss by bolted knees. Roof in short bays, trenched, clasped
purlins and an irregular scatter of windbraces. The 5 southern bays are C18,
with primary braces and bisected studs. Long arched braces remaining to the
trusses. Roof with a ridge, in a combination of clasped and butt purlins, the
principal rafters deeper, but no wider, than the common rafters. The roof
bays do not correspond to the wall bays. This end of the barn has a number of
reused sections of wall-plate, taken from a late medieval or early C16 house,
with housings and shutter-slides for diamond-mullioned windows, 2 of 6 lights.
