1/3 The Thatched Cottage

House, until recently divided into 2. Late C17. One-and-a-half storeys. 4
bays: the northernmost bay wider and of slightly different date. Timber-
framed, rendered along front and rear, weatherboarded on south gable wall.
Thatched roof. Internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. C19
small-paned casement windows and 2 eyebrow dormers. The 3 southern bays
include a good deal of reused timber: one tie-beam has a trench for a passing
brace. Between the 2 upper rooms the partition wall-framing has been adapted
to include an apparently original doorway. Narrow rafters, set on edge:
ceiled off at collar level. The hearth on the ground storey has an original
timber lintel above a C20 fireplace. The partition walls on the ground storey
do not correspond to the position of the main beams. In the northern bay the
rafters are more substantial, still without principals, and ceiled off just
below the collars. One ground storey room has a main beam with two-and-a-half
inch chamfer and scroll-stop with groove: joists set on edge. No reused
