House, formerly divided into 3, now into 2. Late C16. 2 storeys. Timber-
framed and rendered with thatched roof and internal chimney-stack. To the
west of the stack the frame stands on a high brick plinth up to the sill of
the ground-storey windows. 2 late C20 2-storey extensions at the rear. C20
3-light casement windows with a single bar; an enclosed gabled porch to Tudor
Cottage, with a plank door, and a similar plank door to the adjoining cottage.
Good quality framing fully exposed inside. Tudor Cottage (on east side of
stack) is in 3 bays, originally without any partitions on ground or first
storey. The ground-storey ceil ing has 2 very heavy main beams with cross-
beams to 2 bays, but in the easternmost bay the joists are set at right-angles
to the main beam: all joists are wide, closely-set, flat and unchamfered.
Housings for 5-light diamond-mullioned windows in the front and back walls and
further diamond-mullion housing on the upper storey. Trusses with cambered
tie-beams and long arched braces; side purlin roof. Slightly-cranked tension
braces to the corners of the frame. In the adjoining cottage (on west of
stack) the ground-storey ceiling is very high, and there are signs of
alterations, although the upper storey is similar to the remainder of the
frame. It is possible that the chimney-stack is an insertion: one large open
fireplace with Tudor brick surrounds.
