Description

TL 96 NW GREAT BARTON EAST BARTON

2/9 Keeper's Cottage
-

- II

Late C15 hall house, with late C16 alterations. One-and-a-half storeys; 3-
cell form; 4 bays. Timber-framed and rendered, with roughcast surface; clay
pantiles. An internal chimney-stack: saw-tooth shafts with corbelled heads on
a square base. C20 casement windows and 2 gabled dormers with plain barge-
boards and spike finials. Entrance door within a C20 porch with single-
pitched roof. Most timbers exposed inside: the middle bay, to the left of the
chimney-stack, has evidence of smoke-blackening on the roof-timbers, and the
chimnney stack itself is a later insertion, intruding into one bay of the room
to the right of the stack. The inserted ceiling is plain and heavy, with
joists set flat. On the upper floor, 2 tie-beams have been cut.
