House. Circa 1600. 2 storeys and attics; two and a half bays. Timber-framed
and rendered, with a thatched roof and an end chimney-stack, set within the
half-bay of the frame. The shaft is rebuilt in plain red brick. Various
casement windows: some 2-light and small-paned, some C20 replacements; gable-
end casement windows to the attic. C20 plank door, resited at the right end
of the front, within a C20 open rustic porch with thatched roof. All the
timbering is exposed inside, and is plain, but of particularly good quality.
The structure appears to form a complete 3-room house, with one room to a
floor. The gable wall enclosing the chimney-stack was much damaged by fire
some years ago, and has a number of replacement timbers. The 2-bay ground-
floor room has a shutter-slide along the rear wall, and an exposed ceiling
with heavy main cross-beams and joists set flat; the fireplace has a plain
timber lintel. At the rear of the chimney-stack is a newel stair, and at the
front the position of the original entry, into a lobby with a door (now
removed) leading to the living-room. The upper room, now divided up, has main
cross-beams, and the joists set on edge, an open fireplace with timber lintel,
and the remains of shutter-slides for 2 original windows. There are no
housing for mullions. The roof, in two-and-a-half bays to correspond with the
bays of the frame, has clasped purlins and arched windbraces.
